Flight attendants have a long and changing history
When considering flight attendants, the expression Stewardess frequently comes to mind, with the name implying females. On the other hand, the tale begins with these commonly referred to as cabin boys or stewards. These stewards originated in maritime travel and forced up the cabin crew who were responsible for the safety and comfort of passengers. Sea ships from centuries back needed this personnel to help smooth away any issues that took place during journeys. It was not until the early 20th century that airplanes started to use similar stewards and afterward flight attendants that made up what we currently call flight attendants.
Uniforms have changed to cabin crew members throughout history. Since the beginning of a mostly or all female crew starting in the 1930s, uniforms have undergone many transformations. First, the attention was on nurse’s uniforms to promote the picture of flights attendants as health and safety specialists on flights. Then, strict military lines supporting conservative principles along with the military heritage of stewards was highlighted. Later, this was replaced with softer, more feminine lines highlighting the charm and excitement of flying.
Changes are made to uniforms, gender, limitations, and other aspects of flight attending during history, but one thing has stayed the same: safety is crucial. From the early 1920s onward, security was a chief concern of this cabin crew. Passengers know that they can rely on flight attendants to keep them safe and happy in their travels across the world.
